Abundantly Blessed

Great and marvelous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty.  Just and true are your ways, King of Ages.  Revelation 15:3 NIV

God’s faithfulness to the Christian Aid Center has been abundant this past year. We have seen many lives transformed and changed by His grace. Many received Christ as their personal Savior, others recommitted their lives to Jesus, and we are seeing a season of spiritual growth which is a testament to the power of the gospel to restore and heal broken lives.

Many families have successfully secured housing in the community as well as employment, seven men are participating in the Men’s Transitional Program and three others are in the interim program. Many of our guests are actively participating in bible studies, growing spiritually and deepening their personal walk with the Lord.

What an encouragement it has been to see the tremendous response from so many of you during this difficult year. As other agencies experience financial hardship, we continue to be in awe of how God remains faithful to provide for the guests that pass through our doors.

We want to thank all of you who have helped make this year’s holidays more enjoyable for our guests. In particular, we want to thank those who sponsored drives to help meet the vital needs of the Christian Aid Center – pillows and blankets, food, toys, paper products, cleaning supplies, and much, much, more.

Your generosity is making a difference in the lives of so many. During this past year so many people have come to us in deep distress. Because of your faithful support, hope and opportunity replace lives filled with panic and despair. We are looking forward to 2012 and waiting to see God at work to meet the heart needs of the poor and needy in our community.

Red & Gold Motorcycle Club - 1st Annual Pillow and Blanket Run

1st Annual Red and Gold Motorcycle Club Pillow & Blanket Run

a Thundering Success!

Despite sleet, snow, and freezing temperatures, over a dozen members of the Walla Walla County Red and Gold motorcycle clubs dared the wintry weather for their 1st Annual Pillow and Blanket Run. With Santa riding in the lead and the help of two support vehicles, the members collected 80 new pillows, 40 blankets, bedding, towels, and other household products for the Christian Aid Center. Organizers said they received such a positive response from motorcycle riders that they are considering holding a Spring Run to collect other items on the Christian Aid Center’s needs list. If you would like to ride for a good cause, please contact Kookie 509.240.7473 or Uncle Roger 509.301.7153 for more information. Thank you!!

God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen!

This past Christmas, several of the men staying at our shelter formed a small men’s chorus and “made a joyful noise” singing carols at various nursing homes, churches, and venues within the community. The men’s enthusiasm and big smiles reflected the joy of Jesus in their hearts and the positive changes He has made in their lives. We’re not sure if they are planning to go “on tour” in the future, but we are hopeful the CAC Men’s Christmas Chorus will become a yearly event!

Kitchen and Dining Hall Remodel: Mission Accomplished

If you’ve ever done a remodeling project, you know how your recent renovation seems to make every other room in your house seem dingy and in need of a facelift. When the Christian Aid Center completed their kitchen renovation, we saw the need to update the adjoining dining hall to complement our beautiful new kitchen. Installation of new flooring and a contemporary color palette brought our 80’s dining hall into the 21st century. Our dining hall remodel was completed just in time for our Thanksgiving dinner. Thank you to everyone who donated time, money, and expertise, to make our kitchen and dining area a place where people can feel at home.

Dean's story is just one of many showing the miracle of renewal made possible at the Walla Walla Christian Aid Center.

cac-retreat-by-cabinRecently, several men staying at our center had the opportunity to spend a few days in the Wallowa mountains enjoying God’s creation, renewing their spirits, and reflecting on God’s goodness in their lives. They shared these thoughts about things for which they are grateful.

For guidance in my spiritual walk – Steve

That CAC “saved” my life because I was on a deep, downhill spiral. Also for the availability, mentoring, and accountability by the CAC staff. – Chuck

For a place where I can enjoy a beautiful day instead of sleeping under a bridge. – Rocky

For a place where I could physically as well as spiritually heal. – John

For a place to stay while in need. Especially for the support I’ve had while here and for the bible study, the first once I’ve been part of. – Faron

For a place to start fresh, where I can institute new values and responsibilities as well as being reliable for others. I’m also grateful for what has been provided spiritually, from the bible studies to CAC providing a new bible! This has really encouraged my walk. – Ken

During this holiday season, may your heart rejoice and be thankful for all God’s blessings in your life.

Over the past few weeks, the CAC kitchen has experienced a much needed “facelift” to provide a warm and inviting atmosphere for the volunteers who faithfully serve over 90 meals per day while increasing the efficiency, storage, and safety of our kitchen.

CAC would like to thank Skip and Jane Harrold for framing and coordinating the entire project, Jody Norton from Norco Drywall who donated the labor for drywall/taping/sanding the kitchen renovation, Alden Thompson and Sabbath School class at WWU, in particular, Dan Wolcutt with Sheridan Woodworking and Phill Thompson with Systematic Wood Designs for the construction and installation of new cabinets and countertops, Pacific Power & Light along with the Stubblefield Trust for our new flooring, Doyle Electric for installing the lights, Slavik Kuzmetsov with Meticulous Touch and students from Whitman College who painted, Reiff Manufacturing for stainless steel work and to many of YOU who have given financially to this project. Special thanks to the men staying at CAC who helped with the demolition, prepping and cleaning daily during each stage of the renovation!

We are blessed by the continued generous community support of this ministry as we strive to feed both body and soul of the poor, homeless, and hurting in our community.

When you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land which he has given you. Beware lest you forget the Lord your God by not keeping His statutes which I am commanding you this day; lest, when you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built good houses and lived in them…then your heart becomes proud, and you forget the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, out of slavery. Deuteronomy 8:10-14 (NAS)

A jail cell, a cement bunk, a blanket and a Bible. Not exactly the place where you would expect a miracle, but God has a way of redeeming even the most difficult circumstances by His grace. During one of the darkest time in his life, John found God - a Divine encounter that eventually changed the course of his life.

John shares his memory of that day. “My life was out of control, I was lost like a ship with no mooring, lost at sea. Sitting alone in my cell, I opened the Bible and began reading. The verses in Deuteronomy 8:10 – 20 described my life. For a time, my life would go well. I had a job, relationship, and my own place. Eventually I started to believe that I could do it on my own which always led to relapse and loss. Every aspect of my life was short term, chaotic, and selfish, living only for the moment to please myself and my addictions at anybody’s expense.”

John first came to the Christian Aid Center in the fall of 2010, relapsed within a few days and left. A short time later he returned determined to make a positive change in his life. The first few weeks at CAC were very difficult, and John struggled daily, if not hourly, to remain sober.john

As John opened his heart and life to God, God proved Himself faithful to provide all John needed to break free from the slavery of addiction. John has been sober since November 20, 2010 and sees hope and a future.

My whole outlook on life, in general, has changed since coming to CAC,” John says.”My attitude is more optimistic instead of pessimistic. I realize I can smell the flowers and see the sunshine for their beauty. My clarity is a lot better on life and what it holds for me. I have gained the trust of others around me. I’ve gained a reason to smile and to be loved. I’ve mainly gained the love of Jesus Christ and His father God, my sobriety, and a reason to live.”

Each Sunday John attends the Vineyard Free Methodist Church and recently became a member. He accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior earlier in life and was baptized in March as a recommitment of his faith. John participates in the Men’s Transitional Program at CAC, attends bible studies, classes, works in the kitchen Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings, and shares duties as dorm monitor. He is currently enrolled in the IMPACT program at WWCC, a retraining program for individuals re-entering the job market.

John is committed to his recovery and he knows that his personal faith is key to his continued sobriety. “My goal is to remain in close contact with my High Power whom I call God, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. I want to make amends to those whose lives I’ve damaged and retain a relationship with my children. My desire is to be a pro-social person in today’s society.”

God has given John fresh hope and a new purpose. Please pray for John as he continues in his recovery and grows in his relationship with God and others.

Randy Grant, YMCA’s new Executive Director, has jumped in with both feet introducing himself and some fresh ideas to our community since he took over this position one year ago. Randy is dedicated to building interagency cooperation and community networks as he reaches out to our valley. Recently an opportunity arose for our ministry to team up with the Y. Four men from CAC, Delbert, Darrell, Dean, and Paul, stepped forward and volunteered to help with the YMCA’s remodeling of their Harmony Room. All total, they donated over 120 man-hours installing laminate flooring, baseboard and mirrors. It was a win/win situation for everyone. The YMCA now has a beautiful space for activities and classes and the project gave our guests at the Christian Aid Center an opportunity to give back to the community.

A great big “Thank You” to all who help make the holidays more enjoyable for the homeless!  Christian Aid Center is grateful that so many in our community live by the scripture, “It is more blessed to give than to receive”.   A number of caring businesses, organizations, and individuals made CAC part of their holiday plans not just another obligation in an already busy season. For many volunteers and donors, the time they spent here and the gifts they gave symbolize the true spirit of the holidays. Giving back to others gave the season meaning!  Thank you for giving us the honor to pass along your gifts in His name!

So often, the stories represented here are of our clients and the day to day struggles that are faced in overcoming homelessness.  This month we decided to share a different perspective . . . . that of a faithful volunteer and his journey to helping make a difference travis-randy-joycein one man’s life.

“Last November, I had the joy of bringing a message to the chapel service at the Christian Aid Center. As is my custom, I invited anyone who wished to remain after the service, to meet with me for a time of sharing and prayer. One man remained. His name was Travis.  He told me that he had just been released from prison and that he was asking God to help him turn his life around. I assured him that such would be God’s desire for him, and with God’s strength, he could do it.
